Tasik Dayang Bunting sits roughly fifteen metres above the sea that surrounds it, separated from the Andaman by a wall of limestone only a few hundred metres thick. The freshwater lake fills a collapsed cave system — a karst doline flooded after its roof gave way.
Malay tradition names it the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden, after the silhouette of the ridge above it, and attaches to the water an old fertility legend tied to the celestial princess Mambang Sari.
The island is the second largest in the Langkawi archipelago and one of the anchor sites of the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, designated in 2007 as the first geopark in Southeast Asia. Its bedrock belongs to the Setul Formation, a marine limestone laid down between roughly 480 and 370 million years ago.
